Maria Perez Mena

Dr. María Pérez Mena is a part-time Design Researcher at READSEARCH (UH/PXL-MAD). Her expertise focuses on enhancing the reading experience for individuals with diverse needs. She designs typographic tools that prioritize human-centered design using mixed-research methods. Dr. Pérez Mena holds a Ph.D. from the University of Basque Country, awarded “with the highest distinction”. Her research revolves around generating, connecting, and articulating ideas throughout the design process. Her primary focus was on typeface design, where she employed design thinking and a holistic approach to produce compelling narratives and inform design decisions. Dr. Pérez Mena’s postdoctoral research explores visualizing affective information within text. Her research investigates the impact of expressive typefaces to allow readers to immerse themselves in the story and access more profound levels of comprehension.

Dr. Pérez Mena is a proud member of the Data Science Institute at UHasselt and collaborates with Microsoft Advanced Reading Technologies USA within the research line of Visual Prosody under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ann Bessemans.
